My Foray into Sci-Fi

I've never really given science fiction much of a chance. Fantasy received its share of my attentions: Lord of the Rings, The Mists of Avalon, and other less popular titles. But science fiction and other more technical fictions always got the boot. I even took a sci-fi course during my undergraduate degree, hoping to be introduced to the genre in such a way that I might fall in love with it the way I did Gothic literature, or, at least be able to appreciate it, as I did with most medieval works. But alas, while I loved discovering and reading Borges, I couldn't connect to the other big name sci-fi authors like Verner Vinge.

That was until I was introduced to Connie Willis. Recommended to me by my husband's friend's wife, I found Bellewether on my trusty OverDrive app you all know I love.

I was not let down by my choice: Willis delivers an entertaining fiction about two characters thrust together by the fate of scientific discovery and the mishandlings of a very unreliable office assistant. My worst fears about science fiction as a genre were dispelled: I never felt too dumb to understand what was going on, I never got bored from too much technical talk, and I found myself charmed by Sandra Foster, the book's heroin. I loved her focus on sociology and fascination with the emergence of fads and trends across periods of time: like the bob! How did it start and who started it? I even grew somewhat fond of flip, the incompetent assistant who foils nearly every task given to her.

So floored am I by this new author that's given me the groundwork for what I hope are more science fiction and fantasy reads, here's a list of other works by Connie Willis I plan on checking out. Maybe you will, too:
