WOMEN - HISTORY - MAKING

I love March because it celebrates Women's History month and National Craft month - and the two couldn't go better hand-in-hand.

The concept of 'women's history' is a new one: "as recently as the 1970's, women's history was virtually an unknown topic in the K-12 curriculum or in general public consciousness."

Think about that.

We as a society have only begun to take seriously the work and discourse of women's history for less than 50 years.

But women have been making history, and have been a vital part of history, since people first began to populate Earth.

Sappho, Cleopatra, Hildegard von Bingen, Herculine Barbin,

Elizabeth the I, Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Marie Curie, Frida Kahlo, Simone de Beauvoir, Indira Gandhi, Malala Yousafzai - women have always been makers, creators, and authors of history.

Which is why it's also perfectly poised that March should also honor crafts and making. For as long as women have been making history, we've also been making. Whether out of need or vanity, the act or drive to create is an important tenet in the broad narrative that is women's history.

I think about Frida Kahlo painting out her pain onto a canvas.

Or Ghada Amer and her beautiful body of embroidered, textured work, celebrating craft and utterly abandoning the concept of high vs. low art.

I'm ready to celebrate women, history, and making this March and I've got lots of things planned, including giveaways & new things to come on the website!

Cushy is growing and expanding and soon I'll have some news to share! In the meantime, I have a lot of things in store for March that I'm excited to share with you. Recipes, book lists & recommendations, and musings on fashion and style. Here's a list of this month's features:

FEATURES

*Book Review - March 10th*

South and West by Joan Didion

I'm so excited to get my hands on Didion's most recent publication, South and West, which delves into two excerpts from a notebook Didion kept while traveling with her husband, John Gregory Dunne, through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama in June 1970.

*Fashion & Beauty - March 17th*

3 modern spins on Belle's looks in Disney's Beauty & the Beast

This feature will take you through three modern takes on three different looks worn by Belle in Disney's Beauty & the Beast. All pieces will be thrift store purchases from local haunts I love to frequent! I hope to inspire your imagination and your frugal sensibility.

*Cushy Creation - March 24th*

Women & Creation

This will be my third round participating in the Tete-a-Tete trading cards project through the Women and Creativity organization. This beautiful project celebrates women's creativity by giving participants 10 trading cards to 'create' on - however they wish. Participants then mail the cards back to the organization, they shuffle all the cards and then mail them back so you have 10 new cards from fellow women artists!

*Cushy Corner - March 27th*

Ivy Tea Room

My friend Cassandra and I are attending a Beauty and the Beast themed tea at Albuquerque's Ivy Tea Room in celebration of the new movie release starring Emma Watson coming out on the 17th. Aptly titled "Be Our Guest," the themed tea will feature the tea room's take on dishes served during the infamous musical scene. Stay tuned for pictures!
